ESL

What is ESL?

ESL stands for English as a Second Language.  The purpose of the ESL program is to help ensure that children who are English Language Learners (ELL), including immigrant children and youth, attain English proficiency, develop high levels of academic attainment in English, and meet the same challenging State academic content and student academic achievement standards as all children are expected to meet.

This is outlined in No Child Left Behind, a new federal law to improve education in the U.S.

The ESL program is designed to meet the educational needs of English language learners who possess a language other than English. Full-time Louisiana certified English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers provide a high quality ESL instructional program for identified ELL students.
